Fast Charging Explained: PD, PPS & QC for iPhone, Samsung and Pixel
PD, PPS and Quick Charge explained in simple words, with the right charger and cable for iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and USB-C laptops in Pakistan.
Why does one charger fast charge your iPhone but charge a Samsung slowly? The answer is the fast charging protocol. Your phone and charger talk to each other and agree on a speed, and they can only use a standard both of them support. This guide explains PD, PPS and Quick Charge in simple words, so you can buy the right fast charger in Pakistan the first time.
The short answer
| Your phone | Look for | Minimum charger |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone (USB-C or Lightning) | USB-C Power Delivery (PD) | 20W USB-C PD |
| Samsung Galaxy (Super Fast Charging) | USB-C PD with PPS | 25W PPS for the full speed |
| Google Pixel | USB-C PD (newer models also use PPS) | 20W or higher USB-C PD |
| Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Infinix, Realme | Their own protocol for top speed; PD or QC 3.0 for fast charging with other chargers | 18–20W PD or QC 3.0 |
| USB-C laptops and MacBooks | USB-C PD at high wattage | 45W–65W or more, depending on the laptop |
USB Power Delivery (PD)
USB Power Delivery is the universal fast charging standard for USB-C. iPhones, iPads, Google Pixels, Samsung phones and most USB-C laptops all use it. Apple says a 20W or higher USB-C adapter can fast charge an iPhone 8 or later to around 50% in about 30 minutes.
Good 20W PD chargers include the HOCO CS13 and the HOCO N40. If you also need a USB-A port, the HOCO CS14 has USB-C PD20W plus USB-A QC3.0.
PPS: why Samsung needs it
PPS (Programmable Power Supply) is part of USB PD 3.0. Instead of fixed steps such as 5V or 9V, the charger can adjust voltage in small steps that the phone asks for. This means less heat and more efficient charging.
Samsung's Super Fast Charging (25W) and Super Fast Charging 2.0 (45W) need a PPS charger of that wattage. A normal PD charger without PPS still charges a Galaxy phone, but only at the slower "fast charging" speed. A 20W PPS charger such as the CS13 or N40 also charges Galaxy phones efficiently, but for the full 25W label you need a 25W or higher PPS port. In the car, the HOCO NZ16B has a 25W USB-C port with PPS support.
Tip: open the product page and look for "PPS" in the specifications before buying a charger for a Samsung phone.
Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC 3.0)
Quick Charge is common on USB-A ports and many older and mid-range Android phones. If you still use a USB-A to USB-C cable, a QC 3.0 port gives fast charging. Chargers such as the HOCO CS55A (PD 30W USB-C + QC3.0 USB-A) and the HOCO C126 (two USB-C PD ports + USB-A QC3.0, with PPS) cover both new and old phones.
Brand protocols (VOOC, SuperVOOC, HyperCharge and others)
Some brands use their own protocols to reach very high speeds with their own charger and cable. With a third-party charger, these phones fall back to PD or QC, which is still fast for daily use but not the brand's top speed. If the top speed matters to you, keep the original charger for home and use a PD charger for travel and the office.
Is a higher-watt charger safe for my phone?
Yes. A 65W charger does not force 65W into a phone. The phone and charger agree on a safe level, and the phone only takes what it can handle. This is why one good multi-port charger can safely charge a phone, earbuds and a laptop. The HOCO N79 65W GaN charger even shows the live charging power on its display, so you can see it working.
Do cables matter? Yes
- Phones: any good USB-C to USB-C cable rated 60W, such as the HOCO X59, is more than enough.
- iPhones with Lightning: use a USB-C to Lightning cable like the HOCO X127. A USB-A to Lightning cable cannot fast charge.
- Laptops over 60W: use a 100W or 240W cable, such as the HOCO X50 100W or HOCO U134 240W.
What is GaN?
GaN (gallium nitride) chargers use a newer material that wastes less power as heat. In practice this means a smaller, cooler charger for the same wattage. A 65W GaN charger can be close to the size of an old phone charger and still power a laptop.
Which HOCO charger should I buy?
- iPhone only: CS13 20W or N40 20W.
- Phone + earbuds together: CS26A 45W 3-port or C126 40W 3-port.
- Phone + laptop: N79 65W GaN, or the C152 70W 6-port station for a whole desk.
- Wireless: CW6 Pro 15W or the CW65 3-in-1.
